Abstract
This literature review investigates the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing English speaking skills within the context of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in Indonesia. Spanning studies published between 2021 and 2025, the review identifies key AI applications—such as ELSA Speak, ChatGPT, and Dialogflow—that contribute to improvements in learners’ pronunciation, fluency, confidence, and engagement. While existing research affirms the positive impact of AI on specific speaking subskills, it also reveals a lack of focus on interactive and spontaneous communication. Methodologies across studies vary, including descriptive, experimental, and mixed-methods approaches, with a strong emphasis on pronunciation-oriented tools. The review also highlights challenges in AI implementation, such as unequal digital access, limited teacher preparedness, and integration gaps within the national curriculum. Ultimately, the study calls for more context-sensitive and pedagogically grounded research to bridge the gap between AI innovation and communicative competence in Indonesian EFL classrooms.
